m-learningAf Jesper Hundebøl As NKI has moved towards the next generation online learning environment, the Norwegian leader in distance education has embraced m-learning. The aim of the project has been to develop and adapt courses for m-learning via wireless devices such as PDA's, smart - and mobile phones. It is the first year with m-learning at NKI. To demonstrate the current state of affairs, NKI has published a 15 minute video allowing outsiders to see how NKI makes use of the 'always online' environment for learning and collaboration. The video demonstrates the use of :
The demonstration is based on the re-design of a specific vocational course ('sales and services'). We se examples of uses of well known technological solutions such as SCORM compatible drag'n'drop features and MC-questions with automated feed-back (wrong answers marked in red, like-wise right answers...). Furthermore are examples of
Indeed the always online environment places a certain amount of stress on the always online teacher as s/he may be approached by students at any time... As an illustration we see how MSN Messenger on PDA is applied to prompt a teacher whether "it [is] so that online students really get better grades than online students?". The teacher, who happens to be the leader of NKI, Morten Flate Paulsen - sitting next door, replies "that this is correct at NKI. We have thounsands of grades confirming it"! For those considering m-learning or uncertain about the possibilities currently available in the alway online - or pervasive - environment, the 15 minutes spend on watching :-D the demo are absolutely worthwhile.

m-learning M-learning is is short for mobile learning - learning via mobile devices such as Personal Digital Assistants (PDA) or advanced mobile phones/smart phones. b-learning In addition to m-learning and e-learning, people have also introduced the term b-learning. B-learning is short for blended learning - the combination of ICT supported/based learning and traditional on-site learning. p-learning Recently also p-learning has come into fashion. P-learning is short for pervasive learning. Pervasive learning resembles mobile learning pretty much, however, it goes much further, since ideally the pervasive or ubiquitous technologies are used to push content (Learning or Knowledge objects) to the learner where and whenever the technological agent judges the learner needs it... P-learning is still (2005) at an almost experimental state, only.
In December 2004 NKI published a demo of the institution's use of their Learning Management System, LMS.
